The story in focus

The World Bank Group announced $80 million in additional financing for Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of Congo and $13 million for regional preparedness across 11 countries. The funding supports surveillance, laboratories, clinical care, infection control and community engagement, and follows Uganda's declaration that its outbreak ended on July 28, 2026.

  • DRC receives $80 million more for surveillance, laboratories, clinical case management and infection prevention in affected areas.
  • Detection timelines improved from 10 days at the outbreak's start to one to two days by September 2026, according to the Bank.
  • $13 million will support preparedness and cross-border coordination in 11 countries via Africa CDC, ECSA-HC and IGAD.

What the DRC financing covers

The $80 million in additional financing goes to the HEPRR project and targets disease surveillance, laboratory capacity, clinical case management, infection prevention and control, and community engagement in affected areas. The Bank says the project has deployed national technical experts to Bunia, delivered 104 Radione diagnostic platforms and 70,000 tests for Bundibugyo Virus Disease, and supplied 340 tons of medicines and medical equipment.

Funding also aims to sustain maternal and child health services in Ituri, described as the epicenter, and to help protect livelihoods and keep children in school safely.

Regional preparedness and Uganda

Across the region, $13 million will build on support channeled through Africa CDC and strengthen emergency preparedness and response in 11 countries. The financing is intended to let the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development intensify technical support and cross-country coordination.

Planned investments include surveillance and laboratory systems, health workforce development, digital health screening at key points of entry, and measures to reduce cross-border spread risk. The Bank notes Uganda declared its outbreak over on July 28, 2026, with support from the Bank and other partners.
