The story in focus

In prepared remarks at the 2026 Annual Meetings plenary in Bangkok, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga said 1.2 billion young people will enter the job market over 10 to 15 years, while only about 400 million jobs are projected, a gap of roughly 800 million. He described the Bank's jobs strategy and financing shifts.

  • Banga said 1.2 billion young people will arrive at a job market projected to offer about 400 million jobs over 10 to 15 years.
  • The World Bank says project preparation was cut from 19 months to nine and pay-for-results financing rose from about one-third to half.
  • The Bank reports mobilizing $112 billion in private capital last year, up from roughly $35 billion in FY22.

The job gap and the Bank's response

Banga framed the demographic pressure as arithmetic: a gap of roughly 800 million jobs. He said the World Bank's jobs strategy rests on three pillars: physical and human infrastructure; regulatory and policy certainty; and scale through guarantees, equity and local currency financing to draw in private capital.

He said the Bank committed $40 billion last year, nearly one-third of its financing, to infrastructure foundations, and that 30 percent of public sector financing supported policy and institutional reform.

Financing and implementation changes

Banga said the Bank reengineered its balance sheet to create more than $100 billion in additional IBRD lending capacity over a decade, cut project preparation from 19 months to nine, and replaced 153 scorecard measures with 22 focused on impact.

He said mobilization nearly tripled in lower-middle-income countries, quadrupled in upper-middle-income countries, and more than doubled across Africa, but held flat in low-income countries. A new MSME strategy aims to reach small businesses in fragile settings.

How many young people will enter the job market, and how many jobs are projected?

Banga said 1.2 billion young people will arrive at the job market over 10 to 15 years, while only about 400 million jobs are projected, leaving a gap of roughly 800 million jobs.
