Nigeria Ebola case genomically tied to Kenya strain as Entebbe link probed

Nigeria's health minister says its lone Ebola case is closely related to Kenya's index strain, while Africa CDC examines a possible Entebbe airport overlap.

The story in focus

Genomic analysis links Nigeria's single confirmed Ebola case to the strain found in Kenya's index case, Nigeria's health minister said. Africa CDC is separately investigating whether both patients, who passed through Uganda's Entebbe airport on 3 October, had any contact there. No link has been established.

  • Nigeria has recorded one confirmed Ebola case, a 42-year-old Ugandan-born woman living in Abuja who had travelled to Uganda.
  • Kenya has confirmed nine infections, including one death; its index patient travelled from DR Congo through Uganda.
  • Both patients passed through Entebbe airport on 3 October; Africa CDC says a possible interaction there is one scenario under investigation.
  • Nigeria's health minister said contacts are being traced, quarantined and tested, with some results negative and others pending.
  • Uganda says it remains Ebola-free and has reinstated traveller locator forms for all arrivals.

Genomic link and airport investigation

Nigeria's health minister, Muhammad Ali Pate, said genomic analysis of the country's only confirmed Ebola case shows the virus is closely related to the strain detected in Kenya's index case, the first genetic connection reported between the outbreaks. Nigerian authorities said there is no evidence the Kenyan index case travelled to Nigeria or had a direct connection to the Nigerian patient.

Africa CDC said it is examining whether the two patients crossed paths at Entebbe airport in Uganda, where both passed on 3 October. Its head of emergency preparedness and response, Dr Wessam Mankoula, described an interaction at the airport as one possible scenario and said no link had been established. Investigators are also looking at whether the infections shared a common source.

Patient histories and contact tracing

The Nigerian patient, a 42-year-old Ugandan-born woman who lives in Abuja, returned to Nigeria on 3 October after about two and a half weeks in Uganda, transiting Addis Ababa. She developed symptoms four days later and tested positive on 20 October, according to the WHO. She is in isolation and improving.

The Kenyan man travelled from DR Congo through Uganda and arrived in Nairobi on 3 October. He died, becoming Kenya's first recorded Ebola death in the current outbreak. Kenya has confirmed nine infections linked to him, with no evidence of wider community transmission, according to Health Director-General Dr Patrick Amoth.

Nigeria's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention is carrying out genomic sequencing. Africa CDC said Nigeria had identified additional possible contacts beyond the 44 initially reported, mostly healthcare workers at facilities where the patient was treated.

Regional screening measures

Uganda's health ministry said the country remained Ebola-free but reinstated traveller locator forms for all arrivals regardless of origin, and said travellers with a history of travel to DR Congo would not be permitted to transit. WHO officials said the long, porous DR Congo-Uganda border makes screening difficult. In Kenya, the first group quarantined after possible exposure was due to return home on Sunday after completing 21 days of monitoring without symptoms.

What connects Nigeria's Ebola case to Kenya's outbreak?

Nigeria's health minister said genomic analysis shows the country's only confirmed case is closely related to the strain in Kenya's index case. Africa CDC is investigating whether both patients, who passed through Entebbe airport on 3 October, had contact there.
